How much would it cost to get a 93 Ford Escort engine rebuilt?

December 16th, 2010 · No Comments

I’m trying to decide whether to buy a Ford Escort, 198,000 miles on it, for $800, and get the engine rebuilt. Would this be a reasonable decision, given the cost of rebuilding, or are there other high-mile factors I’m missing?

Solution: A lot more than the car is worth. Besides the engine, at that mileage you can have transmission trouble, CV axle trouble, A/C trouble, fuel delivery trouble …You’d be better off saving your $ for a newer car with lower mileage.

Another: Well the 90’s Escorts are a great long-time-use car. I know a guy who’s never had to replace a single part on his 1994 Escort GT, including the clutch, and he has 400K miles on it. An engine rebuild (stock, I’m assuming, and all parts being replaced) would probably run about as much or a little more than the cost of the car. $800-1000.
