Volkswagen Polo keep stalling when I put my foot on the clutch

September 20th, 2011 · No Comments

When i take my foot off the accelerator and press the clutch it stalls. it is a car built in 1985 and it has a manual choke.

- every car in the whole world has a thing called an idle speed sensor which keeps your car at idle when you are not driving /driving and happen to press down clutch. due to the sensor not working it cuts out.
I hear you ask why does it work fine when i first start the car up well that’s because when your car is cold it doesn’t use the idle sensor your car goes onto choke either by its self or by manual choke as soon as the car heats up the choke turns off or you do it manually then car runs on idle sensor.
Sensor must be replaced or if your not sure or ain’t got the money for garage while you save up for part if your not afraid of using a little more fuel once car has warmed up don’t turn off choke or keep choke out a little bit enough to keep car running then problem solved until you replace sensor.

- if its a manual choke why have you got your foot on the accelerator? Does the car run normally when idle? (does it tick over in neutral without using the accelerator) does the car judder before stalling? if not it is not likey to be your clutch.

- Probably worn thrust washers on the engine crankshaft. When you press the clutch it moves the crankshaft along and stiffens the pistons in the bores. Probably quite expensive to fix, but you might be able to raise the idle speed a bit to stop the engine stalling. Remember it’s a 22 year old car!
