Where does the transmission fluid go in a 1991 Nissan Sentra?

October 31st, 2011 · No Comments

I don’t have my owner’s manual and am very inexperienced with cars. I just want to make sure I don’t put the transmission fluid in the brake fluid or something by mistake.

- There are 2 dipsticks under the hood. One for engine oil and one for Automatic Transmission Fluid. Look for a dipstick with a red handle on it. Usually it’s around the driver side. Make sure that the fluid at the tip is red and has a very unpleasant odor. Check the fluid level first. Trying running the car for five to ten minutes before checking it. If it’s low, place a funnel on top of the Automatic Transmission Dipstick tube. Add Automatic Transmission Fluid through there and remove the funnel. Then place the dipstick and check the level again. Hope this helps.

- Toward the rear of the engine you wil find a tube standing vertically with a metal loop on top. That is the dip stick( there is a oil dipstick as well further forward). The trans fluid is added down the tube. To check the level correctly, the engine must be warm. The fluid should stay at the level indicated on the dip stick and be redish in color. Not brown or burnt smelling. Use a funnel so not to spill the fluid. DO NOT over fill the trans !!!!!!!!! Next trip out to a auto store,( pepboys, straus, Napa, etc.) Buy a Chilton’s or Haynes car care book for your model car.
