I am in the market for a new engine for my 1984 Chevrolet K20 and noticed on the VIN that it was originally built with a 350 HD engine. The current engine is just a regular 350. What is the difference between the two engines?
- Chevrolet did things like sodium valves and a 4 bolt main block things that are designed to help a engine stand up rto ssevere abuse in what ever vehicle it was put in. Im sure there are more things that are done to beef up an engine for long duty cycles.
- Two bolt -vs- four main bearing caps. You can turn a two bolt block into a splayed four bolt, but not a four bolt block.
Check out GM Performance Parts (GMPP, you can get a catalog from a dealership). Some of the NEW engines, NOT remanufactured engines, are absolutly screaming deals.
- Most of the 350s built after 1971 were 4 bolt mains. Most the time if it has a 4BBL, it is a 4 bolt, but there are exceptions! It shouldn’t make a bit of difference!
