Remove rear tires, carpet in the rear section and the speakers. Use a plastic drop cloth to seal off behind the seats, so that the cockpit area remains free of fiberglass dust. Locate the “hat” shaped brackets circled in Fig 5. Draw a line straight back from each bracket so they can later be located in the same front-to-back location.
Drill the rivets and carefully pry the brackets off. Lay out your cut lines as shown in Fig 1. Working from the trunk area measure from the vertical wall of the fender-well towards the center of the car, mark at 2”, draw a line parallel to the fender-well. Using a framing square, butt up to the vertical wall of the fender-well and mark the top area of the fender-well at 2 ½” as measured from the edge of the framing square. Continue this line over the length of the fender-well. Using a tape measure and looking straight down on the fender-well you should have a dimension of 4 ½” between the two lines.
The front cut will be against the metal frame, the rear cut should radius in the corner and then go toward fender-well as shown in Fig. 1. On hard tops and convertibles the post will need cut as close as possible to the fender-well this will later be bonded to the new fiberglass tub extension. Coupes will need the speaker box cut free from the fender well, leave as much of the speaker box as possible, your cut should not enter into the round speaker hole. Cut and remove stock fender-well. Clean up edges with a sander.
