Is it worthwhile to have a maintenance contract or service contract for a BMW?

September 30th, 2012 · No Comments

My 2003 BMW’s warranty is about to expire. Is it a good idea to purchase one of these contracts?

- I work at a car dealership as a service advisor and the extra cost is well worth it for the expensive-type repairs that higher mileage cars require…my 2 cents

also, if you get rid of the car soon after purchasing the extended coverage, those types of plans (if transferrable) are very attractive to prospective buyers

BMW 520i couldn’t start, I know it may be a battery but in this car,the battery is no where to be?

September 30th, 2012 · No Comments

This BMW 520i is a M reg (1994).The battery isn’t in the engine compartment nor in the back bonnet.Tried and failed to find where the battery is situated.

- I am pretty sure on that model the battery is in the boot or trunk whichever you call it as you look in on the right side with a cover over it that makes the floor level to the sides.

How much will it cost to repair blown head gaskets on a 2000 BMW 328i?

September 30th, 2012 · No Comments

I’m selling my ‘98 Buick for $4000 and I received a trade offer for a 2000 BMW 328i, but it doesnt run because of the blown head gaskets.

- better be careful on this one because a blown head gasket on a BMW can mean about 1200-2000 bucks to repair, those are very expensive to work on ,you,ll have to have the head trued back up or a head gasket wont last long on it,and the gasket set alone for that one is well over 100 bucks just for the upper part of it,if the head is bad on it it will cost more than its worth to repair it,so be careful the 4 grand you get may all go in to repairing this one,i have done those before and their not cheap to work on at all, parts are high for those cars, good luck with it.

Can I use spark plug wires from a different car on my 84 BMW?

September 28th, 2012 · No Comments

I was quoted $100 for a set of plug wires for my 84 BMW. Can I get a cheaper set and use them. Are they universal to some degree?

- no because they have a special coating on the inside of them to protect them from heat, you have to use the right wires back on it other wise it wont run right.

BMW engines are not unleashed to their full potential?

September 28th, 2012 · No Comments

I heard the office gossips talking about the BMW 118i M Sport and the engine being a detuned version of the two-litre Valvetronic powerplant ? How can you tune it to go from a 1.8 to the full 2.0?

- People always assume the 118i is a 1.8ltr, it is NOT. The 118i engine is in fact a 2 litre engine (well 1995cc) and it is in a low state of tune 143hp. Even the 116i uses the same 2ltr engine at 122hp.

The 120i is the same engine but tuned to 177hp.

The cost and hassle of getting the 118 up to 120 will not be worth it. Just get the 120 or de badge the 118.

How does the maintenance differ on a BMW than on a Ford or GM?

September 28th, 2012 · No Comments

I want to buy a 1997 BMW 318i but I am a home mechanic and have no trouble working on my Ford’s or GM’s. I am wondering what the difference is and if i could work on my own BMW. I don’t want to do any major motor work just the basics. Example: Starter, Oil changes, Alternator, Tune up. What are some of the differences or obsticals i can come to expect. Is it an easy transition?

How much should a four wheel alignment on a bmw cost?

September 28th, 2012 · No Comments

I was charged $65 today just to get the frontend of my 98 BMW 740i aligned and nothing else. I just wanted to make sure that I didn’t get ripped off. I figured at that price it should have included all 4 wheels aligned. Tell me if I am wrong or right?

White smoke coming from exaust of Audi 80 2.0, had recent oil change

May 31st, 2012 · No Comments

- White smoke after the engine is warm would be water condensing, i.e probably cylinder head gasket failiure. there are other things butthis would be first on my list, check coolant level.

- If it’s white it usually just means the car is cold. Sometimes mine will do it if the water is low.

Audi A4s wheels are always loaded in brake dust

May 31st, 2012 · No Comments

- Not much. Several car designers have done this with the wheels. It looks bad. Change in brake shoes may slow it down. But you will be cleaning wheels for the rest of your ownership for sure.

- you can limit your break dust by using ceramic pads.
