Through a strange turn of events, the new generation of the Liberty is based on the Dodge Nitro, which rests on a modified platform of the previous generation of the Liberty. The all-new Lancer is larger in every dimension except length, where it has lost 1.5 centimetres. It rides on a brand-new platform shared with the new Outlander, which provides a 56% increase in torsional rigidity and 50% more bending rigidity. For the time being, the front-drive Lancer is offered as a sedan with a choice of three trim levels: DE, ES and GTS.

In the works for the 2009 model-year are a Ralliart version, a station wagon, and a larger, 2.4-litre engine for the GTS. The very sporty Evolution with 291 horsepower is available for the first time in Canada.
