This workshop manual contains technical specification, descriptions and instructions for repairing the standard versions of the following engines MD11C, D, MD17C, D. The workshop manual displays the operations carried out on any of the engines above. As a result the illustrations and pictures in the manual that show certain parts on the engines, do not in some cases apply to all the engines listed above. However the repair and service operations described are the same in all essential details. Where they are not the same this is stated in the manual and where the difference is considerable the operations are described separately. Engine designations and numbers are given on the number plate (See page 9). The engine designation and number should be given in all correspondence about the engine.

A four-stroke diesel engine with direct injection and open-circuit cooling system. The Neoprene impeller of the coolant pump is driven directly from the crankshaft. Electric starter and flywheel alternator are standard equipment. The injection system is fitted with automatic bleeding.

The Ford supplied Sierra 4×4 Supplementary Workshop Manual is a “must have” for any owner of one of these cars. The biggest problem can be actually finding one to purchase. I got lucky and managed to get mine direct from a Ford dealer, brand new for Ł8, who was having a clearout. They do appear regularly at autojumbles and it is just a case of keep looking. The manual only covers those items unique to the 4×4 Sierra’s and are to be used in conjunction with the Ford Sierra Workshop Manual.

The following information provides basic precautions which must be observed if fuel is to be handled safely. It also outlines the other areas of risk which must not be ignored. This information is issued for basic guidance only, and in any case of doubt, appropriate enquiries should be made of your local Fire Officer or Fire Department. Fuel vapour is highly flammable and in confined spaces is also very explosive and toxic and when diluted with air becomes a readily ignitable mixture. The vapour is heavier than air and will always fall to the lowest level. It can readily be distributed throughout a workshop by air current, consequently, even a small spillage of fuel is very dangerous.

This workshop manual contains repair instructions for the 2001, 2002 and 2003 engines. The instructions concerning overhauling describe the most suitable working method using the special tools listed under the heading “Special tools” . Both the engine designation and its serial number must be clearly stated in all correspondence concerning the engine and when ordering parts. We reserve the right to carry out design modifications and, for this reason, the contents of this manual cannot be regarded as binding.
